Description

Description

It comes to no surprise that the Ancona Fair, established in 1933, has been closely related to fishing ever since. One may call it an instinctive vocation, as it is situated in the fishing harbour of Ancona, at the heart of the old town centre, closely linked to the sea and its trade. Facing the enchanting view of the sea, the Ancona Fair holds a unique ranking among its national counterparts. For years, the Fishing Fair has topped the calendar and has been an opportunity for the city and neighbouring towns to celebrate. The deep local roots have helped it keep its historical venue over time: a bulwark between the fishing harbour and the open sea. The advertisement on the 1st Ancona Fair, designed by using the typical graphical work and types of the Thirties, stands as witness to the grand start of events. The excellent results achieved in 1936 by the Adriatic Fishing Fair led to a yet more ambitious organization of the Ancona Fair, the National Fishing Fair, which eventually became a must event for aficionados. From fishing equipment to fish processing and preservation, the event eventually embraced the entire sector, involving more new operators and greatly expanding the market. Initially conceived on a national scale, in 1954, the event opened up to top international exhibitors and made its name as Europe’s leading fishing fair. The growing success achieved after WW2 led to its seeking other more appropriate spaces. The choice finally fell on sticking to the path set, loyal to its local roots and to its old stone pavilions, and rebuilding it in 1948 on the same site, keeping the same concept. During the same year, the renovated venue played host to the 8th National Fishing Fair. Instead, publishing activities date back to the following decade, and are still the ERF’s distinguishing feature, with Il Gazzettino della Pesca, the only magazine of its kind in Italy, for over 48 years designed specifically for the professional fishing community. During the Eighties, together with a brand new schedule and the opening to new product sectors, theAncona Fair took on a new look, in tune with the new exhibition requirements for a single pavilion featuring mobile and modular elements. The new project was designed by architect Antonio Vichi. The current Fair, as it is known today, came to being in 1981, after the demolition of the old sheds, a highly functional facility, fittingly connected to the airport, motorway, port and railway station. In tune with the growing conference activities, from 1989 to 1990, the Congress Centre was added to the pavilion’s core structure, conforming to every quality and technological standard required to provide effective professional services.

Lying delicately on the northern tips of the Conero promontory, Ancona’s gentle slopes are home to a natural port that is the source of its fortune. From the sea, gaze its natural settings as an old acropolis of oriental origin, with its two slopes both looking on to the sea, one facing sunrise, and the other sunset.

San Ciriaco Overlooking the Doric acropolis with a view on the sea, this is one of the main Romanesque monuments, dating back to the IV century BC, symbol of the Adriatic’s artistic mediation with the east.

Loggia dei Mercanti The finest symbol of the city’s trading spirit, a 15th century roofed building, built for the exhibition and selling of merchandise.

Santa Maria della Piazza Built on a IV-VI century early Christian basilica, the current Romanesque church is one of the most interesting in the region.

Arco di Traiano Renowned Roman monument with its soaring Corinthian proportions, built in 100-115 AD to celebrate Trajan and his work to rebuild the port.
