The Eternal City is unique with its vestiges of ancient magnificence crossing 28 centuries of history: temples and amphitheatres are as one with the City, the multitude of Christian churches, the Renaissance buildings, the fountains and Baroque squares, all blend to form a harmonic background of styles. The huge archaeological zone crossing the centre of the old section of Rome includes the Roman Forum with the Circo Massimo and Coliseum, the amphitheatre built by Vespasian, whose façade is one of the world’s most popular symbols. The best view of the Coliseum is from the terrace of the Campidoglio. The Baroque side of Rome can be traced in piazza Navona with its fountain by Bernini and the Borromini church, the Pantheon, the extraordinary piazza Campo dei Fiori and its surroundings with Palazzo Farnese and via Giulia. The most bustling spot in Rome is indeed via del Corso, connecting piazza Venezia and piazza del Popolo, reaching Villa Borghese on foot with the biggest park in Rome, hosting the superb modern art gallery. Piazza di Spagna can be easily reached after a pleasant walk, at the foot of the legendary stairway of Trinità dei Monti. Among the most famous fountains, Fontana di Trevi brings back memories of Fellini’s Dolce Vita. The heart of papal Rome with its square and St. Peter’s Basilica and dome by Michelangelo, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are the peak of Christianity.
Castel Gandolfo The Pope’s residence in the 16th century, looking on the square with the fountain by Bernini. Lake Albanio is easily reachable.
