Expo aims at promoting Chennai as an all-weather business destination

It is only during the latter part of the year that the city cools down and consequently hots up as far as the trade fair scene goes. That, however, is likely to be relegated as history, what with the first Chennai Trade Expo being organised at the Chennai Trade Centre at Nandambakkam in one of the hottest months of the year – April. And, drawing a large number of exhibitors and consumers. Organised by Tamil Nadu Trade Promotion Organisation, a joint venture with the Central India Trade Promotion Organisation and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, Chennai Trade Expo 2006 depends on the holiday season and the completely air-conditioned facility inside to attract crowds. “This expo aims to promote Chennai as a business destination for both international and Indian products,” R. Sudalaikannan, MD, TNTPO, said. It also sought to demonstrate that opportunities in the region were not linked to seasonal changes, G. Anil Kumar, Manager, TNTPO explained. He said it was hoped that this would be the spark to encourage trade activity all through the year, erasing the three-month gap from April to June. This in turn would serve the purpose of positioning Chennai as the choice venue for trade activity throughout the year, irrespective of seasons, Mr. Anil Kumar said. The Chennai trade Expo, it is hoped, will equal in popularity and success, the Chennai International Trade Fair, a consumer event held in the city over the last three years. A start seems to have been made on Thursday. Despite the weather outside, over 250 exhibitors including participants from six other nations (China, Singapore, Thailand, Kenya, Vietnam and Egypt) seem to be doing brisk business, almost immediately after the fair was inaugurated by Thai Consul General, Royal Thai Consulate, Suphot Yanthvkij, and Deputy General-Commercial, Prakob Panjacharoensiri on Thursday.
