EXHIBITION SECTOR MARKET OBSERVATORY - I QUARTER 2010 RESULTS

The exhibition sector market observatory set up by AEFI in 2009 to ensure constant monitoring of trends in this field continues its activity even in 2010.
The fourth market situation survey - whereby Exhibition Centres belonging to AEFI were asked to outline results in the I quarter 2010 (January-March) and indicate the expected trend for the II quarter 2010 (April-June) - highlights a situation of continual improvement.
In particular, the improvement concerns the number of events and the number of exhibitors and visitors, while the situation as regards occupied area and turnover is less favourable.
The expected trend for the April-June quarter suggests favourable evolution in the sector for almost all indicators in consideration.

SECTOR AGREEMENT FOR INTERNATIONALISATION OF THE ITALIAN EXHIBITION SYSTEM 28 MAY 2010

The Ministry of Economic Development, the Conference of Presidents of Regions and Self-Governing Provinces, AEFI -Italian Exhibition Centre Association, C.F.I. -Exhibition and Industry Committee and C.F.T. - Exhibition and Tertiary Committee signed a new agreement to promote initiatives intended to stimulate the internationalisation of the Italian exhibition system.

The agreement, that renews the July 2004 agreement with a few modifications, will last two years and may be tacitly carried forwards for a further two-year period.

The indications in this agreement form the basis for the presentation of projects to be implemented in 2011.

The agreement lies within the scope of more general action in the exhibition sector by the Ministry of Economic Development that also envisages setting up coordination for the national exhibition system.

AEFI PORTAL NOW OFFERS A NEW SERVICE IMPLEMENTED BY MEETWEB

The site of the Italian Association of Exhibition Centres now offers even more online services to users and members with the implementation of a hotel search and booking system also integrated with Booking.com.
The multi-language digital platform www.aefi.it continues to expand its offering of added value services. The online booking system implemented by Meetweb, the web agency that also handled site design, joins the other services already available on the portal, such as geo-tracking and route calculation, thanks to an implementation of Google Maps and Via Michelin, and booking of air tickets with Alitalia.
Thanks to these services, AEFI not only offers rapid availability of reliable information about the sector - covering exhibition centres/organisers, events organised, training courses, congresses, etc… - but also provides effective and immediate online support, including management of business travel for sector operators.

EXHIBITION SECTOR MARKET OBSERVATORY - IV QUARTER 2009 RESULTS

The exhibition sector market observatory set up by AEFI to ensure constant monitoring of trends in this field continues its activity.
The third market survey covering the IV quarter of 2009 was completed recently, involving 33 Italian exhibition centres belonging to AEFI.
The opinions expressed by interviewees about the IV quarter 2009 in comparison with the corresponding quarter in the previous year highlight the continued difficult situation aggravating the problems already seen in the previous two surveys.
As regards the trend in the January – March 2010 quarter, opinions indicating favourable evolution are higher than unfavourable evolution for all indicators taken into consideration.

THE Ist EDITION OF IULM'S COURSE FIER&VENTI BEGINS

Milan’s IULM School of Communication has published the public competition notice for enrolment in “Fier&venti”, a Postgraduate Course for the training of Event Managers, professional figures in the world of communication specialised in the organisation of trade fairs, museum, business and tourism events.

The Course is aimed at students and new graduates interested in developing a career within event organisation, along with practitioners of the trade fair, tourism and public relations sectors.

This is the first edition of the Course “Fier&venti”, organised by IULM’s School of Communication, under the scientific guidance of Luca Pellegrini and the didactic management of Saverio Monno, and will take place from the 5th March to the 17th July 2010 for a total of 90 hours of lessons.

PRESS CONFERENCE TO PRESENT THE 2010 CALENDAR OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE SHOWS AND EXHIBITIONS IN ITALY

On Friday 18th December, in Rome, the press conference to present the 2010 Calendar of international trade shows and exhibitions in Italy will be held at the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico (Ministry of Economic Development), Viale Boston, 25 (“Sala Martino” hall, III Floor).

The press conference has been organised by the Inter-regional Trade Fairs Committee and the Region of Emilia Romagna.

Speakers include Duccio Campagnoli, Councillor of the Emilia Romagna Region, who presides over the inter-regional committee, the Deputy Minister for Economic development Adolfo Urso, and, on behalf of AEFI, president Raffaele Cercola.

THE OBSERVATORY OF ECONOMIC TRENDS IN THE TRADE FAIR SECTOR, THIRD TRIMESTER 2009 RESULTS

Devised by AEFI to constantly monitor trends in the trade fair system’s activities, the Observatory of economic trends in the Trade Fair sector continues its work with the second survey based on the III trimester 2009.
When compared to the corresponding trimester the previous year, opinions expressed by the interviewees relating to the III trimester 2009 highlight that although an unfavourable situation persists, there are also important signs of improvement.

Moreover, there is an improvement in the evolution predicted for the 2009 October-December trimester, as regards the number of exhibitions, the number of exhibitors, occupied surface area and the number of visitors, even though considerable uncertainty remains.

AEFI PUBLISHES ITS STUDY "BRING INNOVATION TO TRADE FAIRS TO BEAT THE RECESSION"

"Bring Innovation to trade fairs to beat the recession - Ideas and strategies from the Italian trade fair system" is the title of the latest study published by AEFI intended to be a starting point for the establishment of a system of strategic monitoring of the sector that is able to provide different stakeholders with an updated outlook of both the contributions of the trade fair sector to the economy and its critical issues.
The research involved all the major national trade fair centres and aimed at highlighting the magnitude of the impact that the recession is having on trade fair activities, that is set to continue in the coming months. However, it was also aimed at pointing out certain routes that many trade fair centres have already embarked upon in order to conform their strategies with structural changes which are currently underway.
The research also detailed the actions that central and local institutions should take to tackle the major issues that the national trade fair establishment faces, and to avoid the economic crisis weakening the sector which, to this day, is still one of the strongest in the world.

FIRST ECONOMIC TRENDS SURVEY ON THE TRADE FAIRS SECTOR: THE RESULTS

The gathering of statistical data by the Observatory of economic trends in the Trade Fair sector continues. This initiative began last June on the approval of the Directive Council, and the cooperation of all the associated show grounds was requested. Audits take place at the end of each trimester via an online survey and are aimed at monitoring sector trends relative to that trimester in contrast with the same period the previous year.

Associates can now download all the reference material available for each AEFI training programme that took place both in 2009 and in 2008 in the new “Training Programmes” reserved area. The downloadable documents include reports by the speakers who, during the courses, shared their experience and areas of specialisation with the audience. Access to these documents will allow those who took part to integrate this information with what they have already gathered, and enable those who were unable to take part in certain days of the courses to recover material that will definitely be of interest.

RIMINI'S 3rd AEFI TRAINING PROGRAM MEETING ON "MARKETING FOR EXHIBITORS AND VISITORS: INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCES IN THE MODERN ECONOMIC CONTEXT"

The third AEFI training program meeting has carried out an analysis in the innovations in marketing for exhibitors and visitors.
The meeting was opened by Rodolfo Lopes Pegna, AEFI general secretary and Piero Venturelli, general director Rimini Fiera.
Piero Venturelli has also given the first speech illustrating the present national and international scenario for the sector. The significant data refers to the steady growth of the exhibition areas and an economic crisis which doesn’t leave out anyone.
Patrizia Cecchi - Director BU1 Rimini Fiera - has estimated in particular two topics: sales techniques and exhibitor research and how to convey the trade show product referring to both the general topics as well as the Rimini Wellness matter.
Massimo Cantoni - AEFI Computer Commissions Coordinator and Technological Innovation Carrara Fiere – has spoken about the solutions available for data base management
Beth Dickstein - Sales and Marketing Consultant for the ICFF conventions and the GLM Gourmet Group of New York – has illustrated the american reality and the innovations regarding online communication and services for exhibitors and visitors in the trade fair sector. Special attention was was given to the synergy between the trade fair and “new media”.
Naples will hold the 4th and final meeting the 16th September on “Standard and legal aspects of the commercial contracts in the trad show sector”

THE ECONOMIC TREND OBSERVATORY STATISTIC SURVEY ON THE TRADE FAIR SECTOR HAS NOW STARTED

Following AEFI Directive Council approval of April 8 last, the economic trend Observatory statistic survey on the Trade Fair Sector will be starting activities this month.

The Observatory has the following goals:

keep present crisis effects on the sector under control;
make AEFI an independent source of sector trend data;
supply aggregated date to all Bodies requesting it.

Surveys will be done at the end of each quarter with member trade fair bodies filling in an online questionnaire, and will monitor sector trends for the quarter in question compared to the same period the previous year. In January 2010, the first annual survey will also be done.
This first survey means to identify:

- sector trends for the period April-June 2009 that has just ended, compared to the same period in 2008;
- what the July-September 2009 quarter is expected to be like, compared to the same period in 2008.

AEFI IN SUMMIT TALKS ON THE FIGHT AGAINST FORGERY

In recent days, the AEFI has taken part in discussions about combating forgery, held by the “Associations of Trade and Enterprise” at the Ministry for Economic Development. The issue, which more broadly encompasses the struggle against counterfeit brands and products, has been raised repeatedly by AEFI associates themselves, who face similar problems in the course of trade fairs and related events.
The Ministry has issued a general directive for the sector, launching an information campaign through all media channels. The technical bureau will reconvene periodically at the Ministry. Documentation produced during the first meeting is available to AEFI Associates in a restricted section, under “Information for Associates”.

2009 DEVELOPMENT COURSES FOR AEFI ASSOCIATES

In the wake of the innovation behind its creation, the new AEFI website offers different ways of presenting its contents that are aimed at improving their usefulness and diffusion on the web:

Search filters - it is possible to easily search for events in the calendar using one or more filters, such as name, date (year and/or month), type, city, fair centre and product type;

RSS - the AEFI uses the RSS system to distribute the date, title, summary and url of all updated information published in the following sections:

4. Press releases relating to individual events

It is possible to make use of the RSS service preset by the AEFI via a software, known as feed reader, which notifies the user in real time of any update in their chosen websites.

AEFI GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING

A meeting of the AEFI General Assembly and the Executive Council was held at the Fiera di Udine at Torreano Martignacco on 8th April 2009. This was the first meeting of the Associazione Esposizioni e Fiere Italiane to be held in Friuli Venezia Giulia and hosted by Udine e Gorizia Fiere.
Opened by Sergio ZANIRATO, President of Udine e Gorizia Fiere Spa and Giovanni DAL POZZO, President of the Udine Chamber of Commerce, the meeting focused specifically on the current situation within the sector, with particular reference to results of the survey on the subject produced by AEFI.
It was reaffirmed that, at this particular time, the top priority should be to establish a close dialogue with the Institutions, with a view to highlighting the sector as a unique support tool for the network of companies, the approval of a regulatory framework for a thorough recognition of the trade fair sector, as well as the implementation of a permanent coordination between all levels of institutions, both local and national alike.
The meeting also took into consideration the judicial and technical issues facing respective commissions, and the new proposed activities for 2009 on both a national and international level.

AEFI LAUNCHES ONLINE ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GOOGLE

In the next few days, the AEFI's online advertising campaign in partnership with Google will be launched, enabling the official website of the Italian Trade Fair System to improve its own international prominence, as well as that of its member trade fair centres.

The Google campaign has been particularly designed to attract more English speaking users to the website, with the aim of promoting the Italian Trade Fair System, individual centres and specific product sectors alike. The final objective is to multiply opportunities for contact between Italian and foreign operators in the sector.

The results of the campaign will also be systematically collected and analysed, as has long been the case for visits to the website, in order to improve the performance of the site and make it an increasingly useful tool for the international promotion of the Italian Trade Fair System and of individual AEFI members.

AEFI & TRADE FAIRS: THE MARCH ISSUE IS ALSO DISTRIBUTED IN CHINESE, ARABIC AND RUSSIAN

Distribution of the quarterly newsletter AEFI & Trade Fairs continues, edited by Il Sole 24 Ore and produced by AEFI in collaboration with ICE and the Ministry for Economic Development within the remit of the sector agreement for the internationalisation of the Trade Fair System.

The newsletter aims to document the spread of Italian trade fairs abroad, with a strongly international slant, particularly focusing on emerging countries and in areas characterised by the most attractive growth margins, such as China, Russia and the Middle East.

As well as in the regular languages, Italian and English, the March 2009 issue has also been published in Chinese, Arabic and Russian.

FIRST UFI ECONOMIC CRISIS BAROMETER SURVEY RESULTS

The results of the first “Economic Crisis Barometer” survey of the exhibition industry conducted by UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, reflect the overall global business climate.
UFI’s members, the international leaders of the exhibition world, answered the association’s independent survey which has been designed to assess the impact of the “economic crisis” over time.

The results of this first survey edition are based on replies collected by UFI from participants in 44 countries during January and February 2009. Included are replies to the identical survey collected by SISO, the Society of Independent Show Organizers, among its members in the USA. The ten points covered in the online questionnaire ranged from an assessment of business fluctuations prior to 2009, to forecasts of business recovery expectations.

You are invited to apply for the 2009 UFI Operations Award.

The theme of this year is “Logistic during build-up and dismantling”: your entry must relate to a completed logistics project for build-up and dismantling before and after an exhibition. Entries submitted must describe a solution which has been successfully implemented and evaluated by an organizer or venue manager.

Evaluation will be based on quantitative and/or qualitative results. Your entry must include the project objectives, the actions undertaken to reach those objectives and the results obtained.

The competition is open for UFI members and non-members.

COMPLETED THE UFI'S ANNUAL OPEN SEMINAR IN ASIA

A record 208 delegates from 26 countries and regions gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last week for UFI's annual Open Seminar in Asia. The focus of the meeting, hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, was "Ten Steps to Better Exhibitions" with a group of experts from around the world providing practical tips on how to run exhibitions in a time of crisis. Next year's UFI Open Seminar in Asia 2010, to be hosted by Taitra, will take place at the Taipei World Trade Centre on March 4 to 5. www.ufi.org

AEFI UPDATES: A WEB SITE WITH FOREFRONT TECHNOLOGIES

According to the most recent concept of web 2.0, the new AEFI’s website uses the most forefront technologies, that are “standards” at the same time.

This allow the AEFI website to be connected with the most common web services about geographical references, such as:

Google Maps – research and visualization of geographical maps, which allow to localize fairs, estimate the route, see pictures from satellite about expo centres.

ViaMichelin – maps and routes display, hotels and restaurants location nearby the exhibitions centres.
